“Sentilals” captures a rare and intimate moment in the life of an African wild dog pack, inspired by my time at Anabezi River lodge in Zambia. Observing these remarkable creatures in their natural habitat left a lasting impression—especially the intricate social rituals that unfold as the day turns to dusk.
During most of the day, the pack rested in a lazy sprawl, their patterned coats blending into the sun-drenched earth. But as the golden light of late afternoon settled over the landscape, everything changed. A quiet tension rippled through the group as they stirred from their slumber, all eyes instinctively drawn to their matriarch. Her slightest movement was noted, acknowledged, and responded to. Some approached her directly, seeking reassurance through nuzzles and head rubs. Others stretched and playfully tested each other with bows and quick dashes—expressions of camaraderie and readiness.
After quenching their thirst at the river’s edge, the atmosphere shifted again. A few among them grew noticeably more alert, their ears pricked forward, scanning the opposite riverbank for movement. This was the moment of transition—the playful, social exchanges giving way to an unspoken readiness. It was time to hunt.
This oil painting, measuring 100×100 cm, reflects that balance between stillness and action, between the bonds that hold the pack together and the instincts that drive them forward. The soft, abstracted background allows the viewer to focus on the intricate stance of the three wild dogs—each caught in that liminal space between rest and readiness. Earthy, muted tones mirror the warm hues of the Zambezi wilderness, while the contrast of light and shadow emphasizes their alert expressions.
“Sentinals” is not just a tribute to the African wild dog but a celebration of the unbreakable connections that define their existence. It is a reminder of nature’s rhythms, the delicate balance between play and purpose, and the silent language of the wild.
Perfect for collectors, wildlife enthusiasts, and those who find beauty in the untamed, this piece invites you to step into the heart of the pack.
