Warthogs have a rugged charm that many overlook, but I have always found them to be fascinating creatures—resilient, expressive, and full of character. In this painting, I wanted to capture a moment of quiet necessity, where the energy of the day slows for just a moment as they quench their thirst.

These animals spend their mornings busily foraging, snuffling through the dirt, and digging for roots with their powerful tusks. Their behaviour is both amusing and endearing—they often kneel on their front legs while grazing and scurry away with tails raised like little banners when startled. Despite their coarse hides and scruffy manes, there is a raw beauty in their form, a sense of survival and purpose that I aimed to bring to life with bold brushstrokes and a softened background.

The composition focuses on their interaction with the water—heads lowered, reflections merging, and an atmosphere of stillness interrupted only by the ripples they create. Through this painting, I hope to share my admiration for these often-overlooked animals and their place in the African wilderness.
